One of the exciting innovation activities of Biomaterials Innovation is the development and commercialization of bio-based carbon materials for energy storage in Li-ion batteries. The global battery market is expected to expand rapidly within the next ten years, enabling new solutions in the fields of consumer electronics, e-mobility, and residential energy storage. With our renewable bio-based materials we contribute to making these solutions more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
As an important milestone in our mission, Stora Enso has recently started operations of its newly constructed pilot plant for the production of bio-based carbons at our Sunila mill in southern Finland.

In this position as a R&D Specialist you will help to develop, optimize, and commercialize new innovative bio-based carbon materials for sustainable Li-ion (and Na-ion) batteries, with a special focus on electrochemical aspects. You will join a highly motivated international and interdisciplinary team, and work closely with internal and external R&D partners, pilot operations, and business development. This position can be a perfect launch of your career in industry.
The employment is limited to 1 year.
Qualifications
In order to succeed in this role, you have a PhD degree (or an equivalent qualification) in electrochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
You have a good knowledge of materials and components for electrochemical energy storage, especially for Li-ion or Na-ion batteries; aproven practical and theoretical knowledge on electrochemical analysis methods, especially on electrochemical test protocols for materials for Li-ion and/or Na-ion cells; a solid understanding of other relevant analytical methods for battery material characterization; and experience with writing and analyzing scientific and technical texts.
You also have a strong scientific and technical background combined with structured analytical thinking; a hands-on can-do attitude, problem solving ability, and results-driven approach.
You like to transform challenges into new opportunities and to work independently as well as part of a team; you are a self-motivated individual with an innovative mindset and know how to translate project goals into clearly structured technical and scientific tasks.
Your English is fluent in word and writing.
Your Main Responsibilities
• Design, conduct, and contribute to research and development of carbon-based anode materials for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries.
• Create innovative ideas and solutions to develop new materials and to optimize existing materials.
• Act as electrochemical specialist, performing electrochemical and other analyses, and setting up new electrochemical and other methods.
• Perform own R&D work, lead and supervise internal research activities, and guide lab engineers.
• Act as scientific advisor in areas of responsibility.
• Monitor and analyze scientific literature published in relevant areas.

About the position
As R&D Specialist/Research Engineer, you will focus on development of concepts for biobased barrier films and coatings. Your tasks include planning, executing, analyzing and reporting development activities in close cooperation with our laboratory engineers and senior experts in the field. You will engage in biobased barrier product development from idea to scale and will carry out both lab and desktop work.

Key duties and responsibilities
You will develop optimized process designs for our clients’ pharmaceutical or biotech facility projects. Together with the multiskilled project team at Pharmadule, the Front-End design team, you will take the process design from a concept to a finalized state-of-the art manufacturing facility in compliance with regulatory demands.

The role includes even the following tasks:
- Lead design studies of biotech and pharma processes
- Develop and review facility and process layouts including material, product and personnel flows
- Develop and review Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), Process Descriptions and User Requirement Specifications (URS)
- Support process validation activities
- Keep contact with equipment suppliers for bioreactors, downstream processing and formulation systems
- Participate in client meetings and provide subject matter expertise in process design for manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals

Qualifications
- M.Sc. Engineering degree or similar
- Extensive experience of process design and project management preferably within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry.
- Knowledge of cGMP manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and industry regulatory standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and ability to communicate in a business environment.
